Zhu Mingzhen, a 64-year-old pork dealer in Guiyang, capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has been singing for more than two decades.
About 7 or 8 customers usually gather in front of her pork stall by 10am. It is interesting to see someone her age with such good vocal skills, a customer said.
"My favorite songs are military songs, probably because I grew up in a neighborhood near a military campus," Zhu explained in her spare time.
"I enjoy singing. It's just a hobby I grew up with," she said. When her pork business started in 1992, she usually sang her beloved songs just to kill time and make herself happy.
However, her voice has helped attract more customers, said Zhu's daughter surnamed Chen.
"The crowd has gotten bigger at my mom’s pork shop as well as our business," Chen said. Now the shop sells more than 600 pounds of pork every day in only 5 hours, thanks to Zhu's famous voice.
Aside from attracting customers, Zhu believes singing is also the best way to battle against disease, as she was diagnosed with leukemia in 2011.
"I enjoy singing even when I am working in the food market, this goes to show that we should always look on the bright side of life," she said.
Many customers refer to Zhu as the local Susan Boyle, the famous British singer, for both her voice and optimism. Zhu's latest medical examination shows that the leucopenia inside her body is improving, and she's getting much better.
