Citizens of Guiyang, capital city of southwest China's Guizhou province, have the reason to believe that they will live in a much safer environment and neighborhood thanks to 3,000 newly-installed security cameras around the city.
According to Liu Hui, an officer from Guiyang's traffic police bureau, the cameras were installed around Guiyang’s major streets, squares and bus stations, which are the most common areas for criminal activities such as robberies and looting.
Compared to the previous cameras, the new cameras have resolutions reaching 2 million pixels, Liu explained. The high-definition cameras can clearly record the face, clothing and other characteristics of pedestrians through a face recognition system.
For 54-year-old Zhang Guoqing who works as a security guard in a shopping mall, his job will also get easier.
"In my nine years of work, stealing always happens once or twice a year, sometimes you can't catch them all with our limited human resources," Zhang said. Ever since the surveillance cameras in the warehouse were installed, there hasn't been a single robbery in the mall.
"I haven't heard or encountered any robbery activity since the cameras were put into use. For someone who covers a lot of night shifts, it really is good news," said the security guard.
