Run Run Shaw, media mogul and philanthropist, was arguably the greatest and longest-operating force in Chinese-language film and television. He died at the age of 107 last Tuesday. However, his remarkable efforts in charity still benefit many students, especially ones in poverty-stricken regions.
Sir Run Run Shaw donated more than HK$10 billion ($1.29 billion) to support education and healthcare on the Chinese mainland.
According to the education bureau of Southwest China's Anshun city, the city has received more than 6.29 million yuan ($1.04 million) from Run Run's donation. The funds have been used in 23 middle and primary schools.
To many Chinese he was the "most familiar stranger," as they knew him through the Yifu buildings throughout the country.
Now, students are so accustomed to seeing "Yifu" that many believe it to be a generic name for a building.
Two students from Anshun experimental school say they learned the story of the Yifu building on their first day of school."The spirit of Mr Shaw is really impressive and we wish him rest in peace," both students said.
Meanwhile, many netizens also left memorials online for the death of the philanthropist. "The library from middle school and academic building from high school remind me how great a person he is. Thanks to Mr Shaw, I can study in a bright classroom while pursuing knowledge,"a netizen named "Not in Wulanchabu" recalls.
