Xifeng prefecture, Southwest China’s Guizhou province, is seeing new blood for its traditional industry, which is transforming into a high and new technology industry.

"The world's comprehensive utilization rate of phosphor-gypsum is just 10 percent, but we aim to increase the rate to hit 100 percent," said Zhao Xianming, vice-president of Sinochem KailLin Fertilizer Co.

Sinochem Kailin Group, established in 1989 as a factory to produce coarse whiting, has developed into a high value-added enterprise that produces down-stream products in the phosphorus chemical industry.

Before Zhongguancun Science Park came to Guiyang, Sinochem Kailin Group had been transforming from an extensive management style into an intensive pattern since 2003.

When Zhuanguancun Science Park in Guiyang signed a cooperation contract with Sinochem Kailin Group, the group became a member of the phosphor-gypsum improvement project.

The project has received 6 million yuan ($960,000) in total investment from Beijing Fudekang Group, another member of the phosphor-gypsum improvement project, and it also has an academic research center and experimental field in Hebei province.

"Not only is the coal and phosphorus chemical industry breathing the fresh air brought by Zhonguancun Science and Technology Park, but the pharmaceutical industry is as well," said Liu Ning, deputy director of the industry and information technology bureau in Xifeng.

Guizhou Taihe Pharmaceutical Company, established in 1997, is constructing its new plants in Xifeng to meet the national GMP standard.

"We can produce 300 million capsules per year by applying the nation's most advanced production equipment," said Xie Zhen, vice-president of Guizhou Taihe Pharmaceutical Company.

Based on support from the local government, Xie said the enterprise has grown from a workshop with just 4 million yuan in investment into a garden-like modern enterprise with more than 100 million yuan in assets.

"We combine traditional Miao medicine with modern science and technology to develop new pharmaceutical products that are more effective in treatment," said Xie.

Taihe Group has seen its four kinds of products win the national invention patent, including the qianlie beixi capsule, which has helped the company become a Guizhou scientific enterprise with advanced science and technology in 2003.
