Wengjing village makes progress in rural vitalization

Wengjing village of Guanshanhu district, Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, was once an impoverished coal-mining village. However, in recent years, it has found new life by leveraging its location and ecological advantages.

In 2016, the village established a strawberry garden, which achieved a large harvest in the first year, with an output of about 48,000 yuan ($6,641) per mu (0.06 hectare) and a total turnover of nearly 1 million yuan. In 2018, the village constructed a hundred-mu lotus ornamental garden. During this time, the village decided transform itself into a cultural village integrating agricultural and ethnic customs.
Additionally, it also created a lotus pond base, an agricultural science popularization base, and a comprehensive exploration hall of Miao ethnic culture.
Wengjing has since become an internet-famous rural tourism site in the suburbs of Guiyang. Data shows that in 2023, the village received 100,000 visits, with the highest number of daily tourists exceeding 2,000.
Furthermore, with the help of the government and enterprises, the village is striving to boost both rural incomes lifting and the development of enterprises. At present, the village has a permanent resident population of 2,801 divided into 715 households, with a per capita income of more than 26,000 yuan in 2023.
Moving forward, Wengjing village plans to turn unoccupied houses into distinctive homestays, and continues to explore new products and development directions in the agricultural tourism industry and endeavor to further boost rural vitalization.
