At dawn on Tuesday, the sun rose through a sea of clouds over a village in Sandu Sui autonomous county, Guizhou province.

The day fell on Lixia, or Start of Summer, one of China's traditional solar terms, marking the end of spring and the onset of the season of vigorous crop growth. As the sky brightened, villagers headed to the fields to begin their day's farm work.

Ancient trees, village homes, farmland, and moving figures came together in a tranquil scene, giving the village a peaceful, pastoral atmosphere.
