Huawu village in Qianxi county, Bijie city, Southwest China's Guizhou province, used to be an impoverished village in the remote Wumeng Mountain area. With no road access, water or electricity, the village was isolated from the outside world.

Through targeted poverty alleviation since 2014, the government has built roads to the village and improved the living environment, transforming the rural settlement into a scenic spot featuring Miao ethnic culture.

Relying on the beautiful scenery of the Wujiang River, the village has developed rural tourism and become known as a popular spot for tourists to experience the singing and dancing of the Miao people.

During the first month of the lunar year, tourists were attracted to the village to admire its beautiful flowers and enjoy traditional singing and music performances by members of the Miao ethnic group.

Tourists also buy specialties when traveling, which boosts the village's industries, including poultry farming, accommodation, embroidery and catering.

Statistics show that from Feb 11 to 23, Huawu village's Wujiang River scenic area received 196,800 visits and achieved 95.85 million yuan ($14.86 million) of tourism revenue.

The village, which had a poverty headcount ratio of more than 60 percent, successfully shook off poverty in 2017. It is aiming to maintain its poverty-alleviation achievements through diversified industrial development.
