Southwest China's Guizhou province and the southern state of Styria in Austria held a video conference on March 16 to discuss exchanges in healthcare and medical science, as well as explore the potential for cooperation between medical treatment institutions in both regions.

Sandra Holasek, councilor of Styria State, told the video conference that based on previous endeavors together, the two could certainly achieve further in-depth cooperation in the future.

Sun Fa, director of Guizhou's health commission, said that the province had abundant traditional Chinese medicinal materials and a dynamic medicine industry – urging both areas to establish connections in healthcare and forge project agreements related to the Belt and Road Initiative.

Medical treatment experts from both sides discussed issues related to pediatrics, the combining of Chinese traditional medicine with Western medicine, aesthetic surgery and other subjects during the three-hour session.

Guizhou's health commission also signed a memorandum of cooperation with Styria's medical university to further existing cooperation in healthcare and medical talent training.

Guizhou and Styria established friendly relations in 1987 and the two have seen continued improvements to their relationship through decades of exchange programs and activities, as well as various agreements.

In 2018, Guizhou's governor led a delegation to visit Austria and exchange views about more pragmatic cooperation. In the same year, the province organized a promotion event in the Austrian state of Carinthia. In December 2020, Guizhou and Styria held an online work meeting to boost cooperation.
