During the recent Tokyo 2020 Olympics, a university teacher from Southwest China's Guizhou province received her own special form of recognition – after serving as a lineswoman at the tennis matches in the games – when she was conferred on returning home with the title "excellent judge".

The tennis matches were held at Tokyo's Ariake Tennis Park from July 24 to Aug 1 and awarded five gold medals in the men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles.

Huang Shan, a teacher from the Zhuhai campus of Guizhou's Zunyi Medical University, was one of four Chinese technical officials selected for tennis. Born in 1989, Huang has served as a judge at more than 800 domestic and international major tennis matches.

According to Huang, the technical official selection for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics tennis started in 2019 and 150 people served at the matches.

To ensure the utmost competence and safety of the technical officials, the General Administration of Sport of China and the tennis management center fully prepared novel coronavirus pandemic prevention and control measures.

Huang said tennis technical officials took shuttle buses at 8:50 am and returned at around 11 pm. Due to the insufficient number of linesmen and lineswomen, Huang needed to rotate at three tennis courts during the first three days of the match.

Even though the matches were slightly cheerless without audiences, making it harder for athletes and technical officials alike to fully enjoy the games, Huang said she was still thrilled by the action.
