Ahead of the 2021 International Mountain Tourism Conference (IMTC) and the 16th Guizhou Tourism Industry Development Conference, representatives of 23 overseas media outlets and business associations were invited to visit the Zhusha Ancient Town scenic area in Tongren, Southwest China's Guizhou province, on Sept 24.

The Zhusha Ancient Town scenic area is a national 4A-level scenic area covering an area of 5 square kilometers. It became a cinnabar mine 3,000 years ago and was shut down in 2001.

In 2015, the local government cooperated with Jiangxi province's Jiyang Group and invested 2 billion yuan ($309.74 million) to turn the old mine into a scenic area.

Zhang Jing, PR Newswire's journalist, said that the scenic area combines history with natural scenery, bringing tourists back to the 1960s.

The representatives also visited the Zhongnanmen historic and cultural area, which was home to Tongren's government during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and has a history of more than 600 years.

Pang Jinhua, chief commentator of Spanish media La Voz China, was impressed by Tongren's green and sustainable development and said that it had successfully revitalized rural areas with its tourism industry.
