Guizhou village escapes poverty through green development

Over the past year, Xu Lei, a 33-year-old Party member and Party secretary of Huawu village in Qianxi city, Southwest China's Guizhou province, worked with residents of the village to achieve great progress in green development.

Located in the center of Wujiang River Source scenic area, Huawu village plays a key role in environmental protection in the area. The village has established 123 sewage treatment facilities and has organized teams to clean and patrol the Wujiang River and inspect illegal fishing.

Huawu village cooperated with four neighboring villages to establish a joint village Party committee and develop industries around yellow cakes made of glutinous rice, turmeric, Dioscorea zingiberensis, and cattle.

The village has already established two yellow cake factories with a daily output of 1,000 kilograms, planted more than 400 mu (26.67 hectares) of Dioscorea zingiberensis, and raised 400 cattle.

It is also developing Miao embroidery to promote rural tourism. The village currently has 39 farm houses for agritainment and 21 homestays. Since 2021, the village has received more than 700,000 visitors, with tourism revenue exceeding 300 million yuan ($42.17 million).

In 2021, the per capita annual net income in Huawu village was 19,304 yuan, up from 2,450 yuan in 2012.

As a delegate to the upcoming 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, Xu is eager to share Huawu village's transformation with the public.
