Southwest China's Guizhou province aims to become home to China's top medical treatment resources and promote the construction of a national regional medical treatment center, according to a news conference held on Nov 17.

The construction of a national regional medical treatment center is intended to expand and rebalance the distribution of high-quality medical treatment resources, realize cross-region coordinated development, reduce cross-provincial medical treatment, and improve aspects of medical treatment in which the province is lacking.

Guizhou aims to attract the best hospitals and talent to the province, and provide high-quality medical services with the help of top hospitals.

Guizhou has established a construction work team for the national regional medical treatment center and released 58 policies to provide support in the areas of government investment, land use, talent attraction, health insurance, and scientific research and education.

According to Guizhou's 10-year plan for improving its medical treatment ability and seven specific projects, the province will improve its medical service capacity at the grass-roots level and construct three to five provincial regional medical treatment centers.

The number of class A tertiary hospitals is expected to increase by 30 percent, and 10 major clinical specialties are expected to reach national level.

Centered around the top 10 most fatal diseases in Guizhou, the province plans to introduce medical treatment resources from China's top 20 hospitals to improve its medical services.

Guizhou branches of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital and the Shanghai Children's Medical Center have been approved as national regional medical treatment projects, and the Guizhou branches of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine have signed cooperation agreements and submitted construction plans.
