Gao Chengchun, deputy to the 14th Guizhou Provincial People's Congress and well-known practitioner of Miao embroidery, brought a proposal to build Guizhou's Miao embroidery brand and promote the development of Miao embroidery at this year's plenary, which is underway in Guiyang.

Gao's hometown of Yeniu village is a Miao village in Leishan county where the art of making Miao embroidery has been passed on from generation to generation.

As a national intangible cultural heritage item, Miao embroidery has a bright future, but is also experiencing problems in Leishan.

According to Gao, Leishan's Miao embroidery industry mostly consists of small workshops and has failed to form an industrial chain and achieve large-scale development.

Due to low incomes, most of the young embroiderers choose to work as migrant workers, leading to a dwindling number of Miao embroiderers using the traditional embroidery technique.

Miao embroidery has many different stitches and types, which haven't been classified on the market and prevent sales from reaching their maximum potential.

Gao suggests that Guizhou build its own Miao embroidery brand and form an industrial cluster, train more embroiderers, and implement graded and classified sales to improve the income of Miao embroidery industry.

"It is an honor to attend the plenary on behalf of embroiderers. I hope to promote Miao embroidery to more people," said Gao.
